Best Places to Bike in 30A

May is National Bike Month, and throughout the country, there are “bike to work day” and “bike to school day” events to commemorate it. It’s also a great time to bike for leisure, whether with your own bike, on a bike tour or renting a bike during your weekend in 30A. This will be a great way to see the sights, and even to get in your exercise. It might start a regular cycling habit if you didn’t have one already. Whether you live here or you’re visiting for a time, here are some of the best places to bike in 30A.

Timpoochee Trail

For bikers who want to make a day out of their biking excursion, the 19-mile bike path along County Highway is an excellent option. You can see it all along this bike path. It stretches through several 30A communities, from Dune Allen to Alys Beach. From here, you can see the coastal dune lakes and some of the most beautiful beaches, as well as the lively communities in between. Despite the length, this is a leisurely paved trail for those who want a more laid back biking day and an opportunity to see the sights.

Eglin Reservation (East Trail)

Timpoochee Trail is known for its length, but it’s less than half the size of the 38.6 mile east trail of the Eglin Reservation. This trail is also more varied and difficult for more athletic bikers. It covers both hard and sandy terrains, as well as hills for that extra workout. This trail runs through Nokuse Plantation as well as the Eglin Air Force Military Reservation. You will, however, need a recreational pass to take this trail, which can be acquired through the Eglin AFB Natural Resources Branch.

Bay Loop Multi-Use Trail

This trail is more along the lines of the Timpoochee Trail, in that it’s mild and paved, though it’s considerably shorter at only 8.5 miles. This trail makes use of its position north of Choctawhatchee Bay to move along the beautiful natural scenery, eventually taking you past the Freeport shipyard, which holds special historic value to the area. It was here where settlers arrived in 1830, so it might be worthwhile to bring a camera if you take this trail.

Eastern Lake Trail (Red Loop)

Located in Santa Rosa Beach, this is the shortest trail on the list, only about 6 miles long. It covers both hard ground and sand so it’s a good trail for those who want a bit of a challenge without becoming too exhausted in the long run. It’s also a great trail for bird watchers as it moves through wet prairie, swamplands, the coast, and sandhills.

If you’re taking a trip to 30A this May, make sure to have a bike. You can bring yours with you, rent one along the way, or even take an ebike tour. But there’s certainly no way to see the area quite like riding a bike. Want more information about attractions and events in 30A? Keep checking back on Think Local 30A’s blog.
