Why You Should Spend Winter in 30A

We all know that 30A can be an idyllic vacation spot during the summer. However, if you’re thinking of taking a winter vacation this year, 30A may still be calling. In fact, whether for the holidays or simply a break from their daily life many vacationers prefer to head to the beach in the winter. But why should you spend winter on the beach and, more to the point, why should you spend the winter in the 30A area? Here are a few of the reasons we hear the most often:

Beautiful Weather

Throughout the Midwest and much of the rest of the country, winter is cold temperatures, gray skies, and heavy storms. A winter wonderland might be nice the first couple times, but as the season draws on, people begin to crave the sunlight and milder weather again. If you’re tired of waiting for warmer weather, chase it instead — to South Walton County. Here, even in winter, sunny weather is the norm, and the worst temperatures rarely dip below jeans and a light jacket weather. While it might be a little chilly for swimming, you can still very much enjoy the views of the beach or walk comfortably down the streets in the evening from restaurant to shop to bar.

Lower Prices

Taking a vacation can be expensive, especially in a tourist heavy area. But in winter, when tourism is down in the 30A area, you may find the prices at local restaurants, shops, and tours, are much more manageable. In fact, many budget-conscious vacationers prefer to take a vacation in the “off-season” specifically so that they can save money. This might not be universal, so you’ll want to do your research before you go. One example is Alys Beach, which is known to have the best rates between January and March.

Local Events

Just because the crowds are thinner in winter doesn’t mean that the culture of 30A is in hibernation. In fact, you’ll find a number of events that happen specifically in the winter. The annual 30A Songwriters Festival in January is an excellent opportunity to check out new musical acts as well as big names. The 30A Wine Festival at Alys Beach is the perfect way to make the most of February. Winter is also the time of year when you can enjoy the Baytowne Ice Rink in the Village of Baytowne Wharf. And throughout 30A, you can still find farmers markets to attend, even in the middle of winter.

Winter Fishing

Don’t let yourself be fooled into thinking that fishing is specifically a summer activity. At Choctawhatchee Bay and near the coastal dune lakes of 30A, the fish are definitely still biting, even in the cooler weather. Winter is a great time of year to find Red Snapper, King Mackerel, Flounder, Trigger Fish, Blackfin Tuna, or Mahi Mahi just to name a few. And with fewer crowds, you’re more likely to have the peace and quiet that makes for an ideal fishing excursion.

It may be a different trip than your summer vacation, but 30A has plenty to offer to winter vacationers, with sunny weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Check out the rest of our blog for inspiration in planning your upcoming trip to 30A.
